 Shandel Gilbert, Ph.D.
Dr. Shandel Gilbert, Workshop director and founder, is a teacher, writer, and award-winning author of LETTERBUG, a language arts newsletter for elementary students. A graduate of Brandeis University, Dr. Gilbert received her Ph.D. in reading education from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Gilbert has taught social studies and English in public schools and has been a college English and reading instructor. For three years she served as reading coordinator of Academic Support for Student Athletes at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Gilbert has been a reading consultant to The University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Public Schools. As a young writer, Dr. Gilbert served as associate editor of Bev New York. Later she was a columnist and feature writer for the News Tribune in Beaver Falls, PA, and wrote features for Pittsburgh Magazine and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
